Sean Wei — Now

For my full background, see About; this page is where I note what I'm up to, learning, and watching lately

💬 What I'm doing now

  • CS graduate; IT volunteer in Saint Vincent 🇻🇨 last year; now a backend engineer at a startup
  • I have a 5-year-old younger brother — lately I've taken him to fly drones and to a family musical
  • Painstakingly putting together my résumé to apply for membership of ICANN SSAC
  • Just took the TOEIC English test and I'm waiting for the results
  • Upgraded my daily work laptop from an M2 Air (16 GB) to an M5 Air (32 GB); I bought the old one on a student deal, so selling it at half price was no loss
  • Late March I went to India for the ICANN 85 internet-governance meeting and was a guest in a local family's home — my stomach and health held up just fine
  • Early April I went to France for a space competition, won a special award and was received at Taiwan's representative office in France; on the way back I made a stopover in the Netherlands and visited lots of art and history museums
  • Added plenty of malicious-activity detection to the tg.pe URL shortener, plus a mechanism to report what it catches, and reached out to several threat-intelligence organizations
  • In September I'm heading to India again for the APNIC 62 meeting

🎮 Recent interests

  • Crashing my old FPV drone hurt too much, so I bought a small indoor practice quad; after a few more flights I'm gradually getting the feel for it
  • Grabbed a scrapped fingerprint access-control unit for NT$60 on a reuse site, just to take it apart and see the insides — turned out to be so big it wouldn't even fit in my backpack. It's basically a little computer in there, packed with electronic parts; I'll keep tinkering when I have time
  • Went to a "Human Connect-the-Dots" meetup and met lots of thoughtful new friends

💡 Recommendations

  • I've nudged a bunch of friends to switch from the free Gemini student plan to a paid Claude subscription — it's genuinely twice as smart
  • Spent NT$2,000 on an NDIR CO2 meter and only then realized how bad my sleep had been when it spiked to 3,000 ppm; now I keep a small gap for ventilation even with the AC on
  • Saw a dermatologist about acne; applying the cream morning and night has improved my skin a lot
  • AdGuard on mobile to block ads — NT$150 a year, totally worth it
  • On desktop, uBlock Origin for web ads and SponsorBlock for in-video sponsor segments

🫠 murmur

  • Booked a bug-infested hotel through Agoda while abroad; filed a credit-card chargeback and I'm now stuck in tedious email back-and-forth with Agoda
  • An online acquaintance borrowed money and never paid it back; I worked with Claude to draft a full civil complaint — I wonder what someone with a legal background would make of it
  • At my alternative-service reservist call-up we went to the shooting range; nobody told me to press the rifle stock firmly into my shoulder, so I aimed carefully but didn't land a single shot — I suck

ℹ️ What's a "Now page"

The "Now page" idea comes from nownownow.com: unlike an About page that covers your past, a Now page records what I'm doing right now, refreshed every so often, with older issues kept as the monthly archive below.

These notes are a quick cheat sheet so you can see what I'm into in the first three minutes of meeting me.

You can also browse what other friends are doing: Elvis Mao, OsGa, Wiwi Kuan, Sky Hong, Ted Lu, Taiwan now list
